Michael R. Dobbs, MD, MHCM

Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs

Michael R. Dobbs, MD, MHCM, serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor and Chair of Clinical Neurosciences at Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine, where he holds the FairfaxWood Endowed Chair of Clinical Neurosciences. He earned advanced degrees from the University of Kentucky and Harvard. Dr. Dobbs has authored over 50 publications, including books, book chapters, journal articles, and abstracts. His book, Clinical Neurotoxicology—Syndromes, Substances, Environments, is recognized as a leading text in the field worldwide. Additionally, he has been an independently NIH-funded researcher in stroke imaging outcomes. Through Florida Atlantic University, he is also actively building clinical programs through the FAU-Broward Health Academic Practice Plan, pioneering Amyloidosis research, and overseeing neurology residency programs.
 

He served with distinction in the US Air Force Medical Corps including an academic appointment at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.
 

Prior to his role at Florida Atlantic University, he was the Chief Medical Officer, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, and Professor/Chair of Neurology at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.  At UTRGV he shared oversight of UT Health RGV which rapidly grew to provide academic medical care to a previously underserved region including creation of new medical services and a full-service clinical laboratory. As chair of neurology, he built a department that provides advanced neurology care, education, and research.
 

He spent more than a decade as faculty at the University of Kentucky where as an Associate Dean he had responsibility for many complex initiatives such as successful establishment of regional four-year medical school campuses. As stroke program director he led his hospital to become one of the busiest and highest quality stroke centers in the United States while also building a 34 hospital Stroke Network that continues to grow and bring life-saving treatments to underserved regions in Appalachia.  He led a team that created a novel data management system, the “Kentucky-Appalachian Stroke Registry”, which has fueled clinical trials and original publications.  He has been an institutional principal investigator on multiple clinical trials and has published original research in stroke outcomes.
 

A strong believer in entrepreneurship, he invented a patented dermatitis treatment while a college student that reached the veterinary market as “Genesis Topical Spray.”  He has taught in the classroom on topics as wide-ranging as clinical neuroscience, advanced finance, data management technology, health care facilities design, and art history.  In his spare time, he loves to explore South Florida with his family, run distance races, and paint with oils.
